Are family medicine doctors enabling a dysfunctional health care system?
Strong words from this editorial in the Annals of Family Medicine. Is it unethical to participate in insurance once you realize what a racket it is? I think so, but it’s also a source of fear for many physicians, patients as well, to use a system without health insurance. I agree health insurance is a good thing for surgeries and big accidents, but it’s taken over too much of the healthcare system. We should not be relying on health insurance to cover an annual physical, for example. I can do a physical for far less money than my patients are paying for their primary care coverage through insurance!
It’s a beautifully, almost poetically, written piece that speaks to my heart and helps to motivate me in starting this practice.
